IB Primary Years Program

The IB PYP helps your child...

Keiki Intercultural Preschool is a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme and pursuing authorization as an IB World School.

IB World Schools share a common philosophyーa commitment to improve the teaching and learning of a diverse and inclusive community of students by delivering challenging, high-quality programmes of international education that share a powerful vision.

The IB PYP program draws on research and best practices from a range of national educational systems. The result is a relevant, engaging and challenging curriculum with a global perspective for all students.

Although the PYP program serves children aged all the way from 3 – 12, it “ … acknowledges the unique needs of early learners, aged 3 to 6 years." It is a distinguishing feature of the programme which recognizes that learners in this age range require approaches to learning and teaching that honors their developmental stage, and the importance of play as a vehicle for inquiry.

Assessment

Assessment in the PYP is focused on the child's progress and growth, rather than on a set standard of achievement. Teachers use a variety of assessment methods to gather evidence of student learning, including observation, conversation, and student work.

Key Features of PYP Learning

The PYP framework between the ages of 3-6 is implemented through a play-based curriculum that promotes inquiry, exploration, and discovery. The focus is on developing students' social and emotional skills, as well as their cognitive abilities.

Some key features of a PYP program for preschoolers include:

  1. Inquiry-based learning: Teachers encourage students to ask questions and explore topics that interest them. They facilitate learning by providing opportunities for students to investigate and discover information for themselves.

  2. Transdisciplinary learning: Learning is not confined to specific subjects, but instead is integrated across different areas of the curriculum. For example, students might explore the natural world through science, language, and art.

  3. Play-based learning: Learning through play is a critical part of a PYP program for preschoolers. Teachers create a safe, supportive environment where students can explore, experiment, and develop their understanding of the world around them.

  4. Student-centered approach: Teachers take a student-centered approach, meaning that they focus on the individual needs and interests of each student. This approach encourages students to take ownership of their learning and develop a love for learning that will last a lifetime.

  5. International perspective: The PYP curriculum promotes an international perspective, with a focus on developing students' understanding of different cultures and ways of life.

Overall, the PYP program for preschoolers provides a dynamic and engaging learning environment that promotes curiosity, exploration, and discovery. By focusing on the individual needs and interests of each student, teachers help students develop the skills they need to become lifelong learners.
